UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint designated Opportunity Universities
In FY 2025 both University of Michigan-Dearborn and University of Michigan-Flint received the prestigious designation of Opportunity College and University from the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This new Student Access and Earnings Classification, developed in partnership with the American Council on Education, recognizes campuses that excel in fostering student success, access and strong post-graduation earnings, particularly for students from lower-income and historically underrepresented backgrounds.
UM-Dearborn, where half of the students are Pell-eligible and tuition is the second lowest among Michigan’s public universities, ranks No. 4 in the state for student earnings after graduation.
UM-Flint’s recognition highlights its commitment to educational equity with 40 percent of undergraduate students awarded Pell Grants or federal student loans and a median annual income of $53,320 reported by graduates — surpassing the national average by 30 percent.
This designation reflects the transformative power of U-M in advancing access, affordability and strong career outcomes for students. The recognition affirms the university’s commitment to building diverse pathways to opportunity, ensuring U-M’s legacy of educational leadership continues to shape lives and local communities.
